Wandering with(out) invitation: Fieldnotes from the Isle of Grain

Created by Lavinia Brydon, Caroline Millar, Sarah Craske, Rob Barker and Aki Pasoulas.
Funded by Creative Estuary in spring 2021, a group of interdisciplinary researchers with interests in sound art, psychogeography, creative writing, environmental science and transdisciplinary arts practice, have been working together to walk and map the Isle of Grain as a multisensory environment, including (but not limited to) the sonic.

‘Wandering with(out) invitation: Fieldnotes from the Isle of Grain’ is an attempt to create a sonic map of the group’s fieldwork. The installation weaves together Waterbug Voices (composed by Aki Pasoulas), which explores the underwater world of the marshes of the Isle of Grain; with spoken word (representing human intervention) in the form of field notes and responses of local people; digital film footage of the island’s marshland habitats (including drone, underwater and landscape) and environmental scientific data collected from the field in an attempt to reach and represent the non-human.

The installation was exhibited at the Sonic Cartography conference, 28-30 Oct 2022, Chatham, UK.
