From the Bells to the Wind

This is a loosely improvisational piece for eight channels that follows a written score of instructions, and it was first performed at City University in July 2004 during the ‘Underground and Inside Out’ concert, organised by the City Live Electronics ensemble. The composition starts with bell sounds and ends with the sound of wind.

The piece uses various samples recorded and processed in many different ways in a patch I developed in Max/MSP programming language. The patch allows synthesised tones and samples to play back at variable speeds and oscillate through different frequency and spatial regions in various speaker configurations from two to eight channels. It also reads and processes live sound during the performance and allows the final signal to be routed through external patches for further processing.
